Diana Frances Spencer was born on July 1st 1961 weighing 7lb. 12oz at 7. 45 pm at Park House in Norfolk on the Queen's estate at Sandringham.
She was the youngest of three daughters to Viscount and Vicountess Althorp.
Diana had two older sisters Jane born in 1957 and Sarah born in 1955, and a brother called Charles who was born in 1964.
Her childhood nickname was 'Duchess' after the lead cat in the Disney film 'The Arisocats'
Diana was described as a serious little girl who was fond of history and loved stories about Kings and Queens.
Diana was tutored at home by Governess Gertrude Allen who had taught Diana's mother Frances.
Until 1970 Diana was a pupil at Silfield Nursery School at Kings Lynn, Norfolk.
Then she went to a girls preparatory school at Riddlesworth Hall, Diss, Norfolk.
At the age of twelve Diana joined her sisters Jane and Sarah at West Heath School in Kent.
At West Heath Diana enjoyed sports, she was a keen swimmer and won her fair share of trophies.
At West Heath Diana took and failed all of her O levels and admitted to being "As thick as a plank" and left school in 1977 with no Qualifications.
In 1977, aged 16, she left West Heath and briefly attended Institut Alpin Videmanette, a finishing school in Rougemont, Switzerland
